In the mid-16th century, Aveiro was an important centre of trade and sea port. Its economy was essentially based on salt production and fishery, particularly salt cod on Costa Nova, both activities that earned the city considerable wealth.
In 1575, a fierce storm created a huge barrier of sand, isolating the port and forming a lagoon of still waters, the ria. The blocking of the port and the insalubriousness of the still waters led to serious economic and health problems. These problems were only resolved two centuries later. Meanwhile, many people abandoned the city of Aveiro, setting up new fishing settlements along the coast.
Aveiro is frequently called the Portuguese Venice and is worthy of a leisurely visit.
The canal that passes through the city is used for trips on the famous moliceiro boats, whose bright colours create enchanting reflections on the water. Pastry shops tempt visitors to the Central Canal with their shop windows full of ovos moles, one of the city’s specialities.

The city has numerous art nouveau buildings, their façades full of curves and floral motifs in pastel tones.
Take a stroll through its streets and enjoy its charms. This is a particularly romantic city and also offers a number of activities that are worthwhile discovering.
PLACES TO VISIT
Art Nouveau Museum
Housed in Casa Major Pessoa, one of the most emblematic buildings in the city, this museum is a must-see.

The original house was built by Mário Belmonte Pessoa, in an era marked by progress and by the spirit of the Belle Époque.
Its sinuous and asymmetrical lines, with organic forms from Nature, immediately identify what was one of the most short-lived but also most striking artistic movements of the late 19th century and early 20th century.
It was for many years attributed to Ernesto Korrodi, but Francisco Augusto da Silva Rocha has now been identified as its original architect. For visitors, it is above all a magnificent house to be explored, on three floors.
We suggest that you start by studying the façade, with its rich, decorative stone carving and exquisite metal work. On the roof is a bird of prey that is believed to represent a marsh harrier catching a fish, on a tortoise carapace.

The main entrance opens onto a unique space with panels of tiles and a door leading o the Tea Room. Takes the opportunity to try one of the magnificent sweets of Aveiro and then move on to the Music Room.
Facilities on the first floor include an auditorium, a Gallery of Art Nouveau Artists and the Aveiro Architects Room. The top floor houses temporary exhibitions.

The museum also offers various services:
-Guided tours of the museum;
– Information on the Art Nouveau Circuit, a special walk through the city;
– Special packages for Groups.
