In Madeira, Carnival is taken very seriously.
Seven days of revelry attract residents and tourists to Funchal.

Based on the popular traditions associated with this celebration, the Carnival programme includes a number of initiatives with two high points:
the first is Saturday night with the great parade of floats involving nearly a thousand revellers in a brightly-coloured procession;
the second is on Carnival Tuesday, the zenith of the festivities. This is the famous Cortejo Trapalhão, in which thousands of people flock to the centre of Funchal to watch and take part in satirical tableaus.
