The craft of wickerwork is one of the main industries in Madeira.
Wicker, with its main production centre in Camacha, comes in various sizes and thicknesses, used to make a wide variety of objects. After being cut and peeled, the stalks are boiled to ensure the elasticity required to be worked. It is this process that gives the wicker its brown colour.
Once it is dry, artisans use the wicker to create different objects: baskets, lampshades, furniture and even the traditional toboggans used to transport tourists downhill in Monte.
