CHURCH OF SANTA LUZIA

Santuário de Santa Luzia

Situated high up on Mount Santa Luzia, this church offers a unique panoramic view of the region.

Construction of the Basilica began in 1903 on a Greek cross plan and it reveals a harmonious combination of neo-Romanesque, neo-Byzantine and neo-Gothic elements. Features of the last stage of its construction have led many to claim it was inspired by the Basilica of Sacré Coeur in Paris.

At its entrance is a bronze statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the sculptor Aleixo Queirós Ribeiro. In its interior, besides the two cherubim on the main altar in marble from Vila Viçosa, note the fresco depicting the Stations of the Cross and the Ascension of Christ, and the stained-glass of the rose windows.

CITÂNIA OF SANTA LUZIA

At the top of Mount Santa Luzia the remains of a fortified village dating from the Iron Age are clearly visible.

Classified as a national monument and often called the “old town”, this Citânia is an important example of the proto-historical and pre-Roman era in the Alto Minho.
