Before reaching Porto Covo, the rugged coastline springs surprises around every corner.
Sheltered by steep cliffs, small beaches are lapped by clear water, so welcoming and special that it is difficult to choose which one to visit:

Vieirinha, Oliveirinha, Foz, Burrinho, and so many others where we want to stop.
Praia Grande is one of the largest – a cove of fine white sand.
But Porto Covo is just around the corner and waiting for us with open arms.
Rua Vasco da Gama, full of shops and restaurants, takes us from the cliff over the beach to the magnificent Largo Marquês de Pombal. Dating from the 19th century, the white houses have blue skirting and red doors and windows.
Ask for local crafts. The Alentejo pottery is well represented here and you will surely love the diversity and colors … Wonderful! Knowledge passed on through generations, from parents to children, that shape today the clay making each piece unique. Some of them made on the wheel by artisans who started early in these art!
And the blankets? Fantastic!
Choose what you prefer and note the author and location to visit later and meet the artisan.
But the knowledge also have flavour … You cannot leave Porto Covo without indulging yourself with a magnificent grilled fish or eat a Feijoada de Chocos! Dare to try.
Then wander a bit through the village where the white houses with colorful bars appeal to the absolute tranquillity…

The best place in Porto Cove to enjoy the sunset….
