Guimarães is one of the main tourist centres in the north. Its beauty and its crucial role in the history of Portugal grant it a unique symbolism.

It is commonly known as the “Cradle of the Nation”, as it was the capital of the County of Portugal and the birthplace of the first king of Portugal, Afonso Henriques.
It is a magnificent city where every corner breathes history. A true inspiration.
A walk through the Historic Centre shows us its rich and exceptionally well preserved architectural heritage. Respect for authenticity is revealed in the smallest details. The restoration work carried out, using traditional materials and techniques, also took into account functional aspects, often overlooked in urban areas.
The result is clear to see. In Guimarães “history” lives in perfect harmony with the demands of contemporary life and this has been widely recognised by the national and international community.
In 2011, the Historic Centre of Guimarães was classified as World Heritage by UNESCO. In the same year, the New York Times suggested the city as a destination to visit as an emerging cultural centre in the Iberian Peninsula and Guimarães was European Capital of Culture in 2012.
In its streets we can feel the typical life of a modern city and a passion for culture is immediately obvious to all visitors. Higher education institutions and a young population have encourage new ways of life, without neglecting the cultural heritage that makes this city a symbol of Portugal.
PLACES TO VISIT:
Guimarães Castle:

It was built in the 10th century to defend the population from the attacks by Muslims.
Dominating Campo de São Mamede, the castle has undergone considerable changes since its foundation, including the construction of the Keep and the expansion of the defensive walls. The last interventions were made in the 20th century and were aimed at the preservation of this castle, which was classified as a National Monument in 1910.
Teleférico da Penha (Penha Cable Car):

This is the only cable car in the region and provides an unforgettable experience. It links the city centre to Monte da Penha, which offers us fabulous views, as well as restaurants, bars, picnic areas, etc.
